'Barber' highlights opera weekend

The annual California Opera summer festival, now in its second weekend, is building toward its full-scale production of "The Barber of Seville" on Sunday in Clovis.

Here's this weekend's lineup:

"Fans of Asia," 7 p.m. today, Fresno Art Museum, 2233 N. 1st St. An evening featuring festival artists of China and Japan, culminating in highlights of "The Mikado."

"Wagner and Verdi: A Bicentennial Celebration," 7 p.m. Saturday, Fresno Art Museum. Roy Stevens, Annalisa Winberg, Jonathan Khuner and opera artists feature selections highlighting Wagnerian and Verdi themes.

"The Barber of Seville," 2 p.m. Sunday, Mercedes Edwards Theatre, 902 5th St.. Rossini's famous comic opera in a fully staged production with orchestra.
