Clovis man accused of assaulting 10-year-old waives preliminary hearing

A Clovis man accused of sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl last year waived his preliminary hearing Monday in Fresno County Superior Court.

Kalvin Michael Cardenas, 23, waived the hearing after a judge rejected motions he made to fire his lawyer and represent himself.

By waiving his preliminary hearing, Cardenas did not get to hear evidence against him gathered by law enforcement.

Cardenas is accused of grabbing the girl as she walked to school Sept. 25. Law enforcement reports said he drove her from Fresno to a rural area near Kerman, where he sexually assaulted her, took pictures of her and beat her before leaving her waist deep in water.

The girl was later found walking along Whitesbridge Avenue where she was picked up by a good Samaritan.

His case will move to the trial stage with an arraignment on Aug. 6.
