World Boys Baseball Tournament to be played Aug. 9-13 in Clovis

The 32nd World Boys Baseball Tournament, including Greater Fresno among eight teams and five countries, will be played Aug. 9-13 at Clovis West and Clovis high schools.

The field of 14- and 15-year-olds will also include San Diego, Alameda, Japan, South Korea, Australia and two teams from Mexico — Mexico Verde of Sinaloa and Mexico Rojo of Baja.

This will be the fifth time Fresno has hosted the tournament. The team lost 2-1 to Japan in last year's championship at Sydney.

Fresno has been coached since its inception by Fernie Garcia. The alumni game and barbecue will be July 31 at Clovis West at 5:30 p.m. Alumni interested in playing can reach Garcia at (559) 493-9972. Families interested in hosting players from visiting teams also are asked to contact him.

On the Greater Fresno roster are: Justin Thatcher, Josh Jackson, Clovis East; Ty Heriman, J.T. Gomez, Reedley; Fernando Galindo, Tristan Alvarez, Madera High; Alec Akins, Tyler Osmer, Zachary Whittaker, Clovis High; Jared Westendarp, Central; Riley Hillerman, Minarets; Chris Zaldana, Buchanan; Tyler Ewell, Ryan Torres, Clovis West; Matthew Fraizer, Blake Boman, Clovis North; Eric Regier, Bullard; Thomas Camargo, Kerman.

The tournament schedule is:

Aug. 9: at Clovis West, 10 a.m., Korea vs. Alameda; 1 p.m., Alameda vs. Japan; 4 p.m., Fresno vs. Korea; 7 p.m., Fresno vs. Japan; at Clovis High, 10 a.m., Australia vs. Japan; 1 p.m., San Diego vs. Mexico Rojo.

Aug. 10: at Clovis West, 10 a.m., Korea vs. Japan; 1 p.m., San Diego vs. Mexico Verde; 4 p.m., San Diego vs. Australia; 7 p.m., Fresno vs. Mexico Verde; at Clovis High, 10 a.m., Mexico Rojo vs. Australia; 1 p.m., Alameda vs. Mexico Rojo.

Aug. 11: at Clovis West, 10 a.m., Korea vs. Mexico Verde; 1 p.m., Alabama vs. Australia; 4 p.m., San Diego vs. Japan; 7 p.m., Fresno vs. Mexico Rojo.

Aug. 12: 10 a.m., at Clovis West, San Diego vs. Korea; noon, Fresno vs. Australia; at Clovis High, 9 a.m., Japan vs. Mexico Rojo; noon, Alameda vs. Mexico Verde.

Aug. 13: 9 a.m., 3 games; noon, 2 games; 3 p.m., championship game.

Cal Ripken Regional

Visalia will host the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional for 10-year-olds Monday through Saturday at Riverway Sports Park.

Teams in the tournament include host Visalia Blue, Central California No. 1 (Buchanan), Central California No. 2 (Bullard), Guam, Southern Utah (Carbon Blue), Northern California (Elk Grove), Hawaii, Northern Utah (Rose Park), Arizona (Somerton) and Southern California (Oxnard).

The winner will advance to the World Series in August in Ocala, Fla.

Visalia Blue are coming off a 10-1 victory over Orange County at the United States Specialty Sports Association Firecracker tournament in West Covina and Chino Hills last weekend.

Since May 25, Visalia has advanced to the championship game in each tournament it participated in, and have won four titles.
