High Sierra Regatta

Central California's biggest lake regatta returns for its second weekend featuring larger keel-class sailboats.
There are two races Saturday and one Sunday — starting at 11 a.m. both days — and concludes with a 3 p.m. awards ceremony Sunday. The best viewing area for spectators is at Lakeshore Beach and the Point.
Rec 'n' Fish Derby
Where: Plaza Park pond, Visalia
Get your bait and tackle ready. The pond will be stocked with bluegill and crappie for this event hosted by Visalia's Parks & Recreation Department. Anglers must bring their own equipment.
Kids 7 and under will be in one division, 8-15 in the other. Hours are 8-10 a.m, and sign-ups are $5 on derby morning. Prizes will be awarded to the angler with the three heaviest strings in each division. Details: (559) 713-4365.

-- Madera's Oswaldo Lopez is among the favorites in next week's Badwater Ultramarathon, a 135-mile footrace from Death Valley to Whitney Portal. Lopez won the race in 2011, has finished second three times and holds a personal record of 23 hours, 32 minutes, 28 seconds. The race begins Monday.
-- China Peak's mountain bike park course and new disc golf course opened to the public Saturday. The 27-hole course begins near the summit and ends at the base area. One of the holes measures more than 1,000 feet. Details: www.skichinapeak.com.
-- Two Southern California ski resorts, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, are up for sale, according to a report in the Riverside Press Enterprise. Snow Summit Inc. used to own China Peak (then called Sierra Summit) before it was purchased by Tim Cohee in 2010.
-- The Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering a permit-only deer hunt along the Merced River near Snelling. The hunt will be available to four D-6 tag holders, who will also be allowed to fill a wild pig tag. The hunt runs from Aug. 17 to Oct. 20.
