Ex-Clovis West stars Baxter, Wright compete at swimming nationals

Former Clovis West High swimming stars Tristin Baxter (Arizona State) and Cary Wright (USC) each had a pair of top-16 placings at the Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championships Trials in Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Baxter placed ninth in the the 800 free in 8:37.19, more than 2 seconds faster than her previous best. She also placed 16th in the 200 butterfly in 2:14.10 after swimming her best time in the event (2:13.69) in the preliminaries.

Wright was 13th in the 1,500 free in 15:39.27, nearly 2 seconds better than his previous best, and 16th in the 200 fly in 2:03.09 after swimming a previous-best 2:00.23 in the preliminaries.

Cheyenne Coffman, the former Sierra High and Fresno Pacific standout, placed 44th in the 100 freestyle in 57.42. London Olympics star Missy Franklin won the final with the second-fastest time in the world this year (53.43).
