There sure are plenty of weekend cyclists pedaling up Highway 168 these days. Many of them are training for this annual event, rated as one of America's toughest rides.

If you're not up to riding 155 miles with 13,500 feet of elevation gain, opt for the shorter Tollhouse Century or Millerton Metric rides.

-- Rangers at Kings Canyon National Park offer half-mile Grant Tree walks at 10 a.m. daily. Meet at the Grant Tree parking lot.

-- Recreational boating generates an annual economic value of $121 billion, according to a recent study by the National Marine Manufacturers Association. The boating industry also supports 964,000 jobs and 34,833 businesses.

In addition, new sailboat sales increased 29.2% to 5,945 in 2012, while new powerboat sales increased 10% to 157,300 last year. It's also estimated that 88 million adults participated in recreational boating at least once during the year.

-- Alternatives for managing Case Mountain will be the subject of an upcoming public meeting planned by the Bureau of Land Management. Date and location will be announced. -- Attention junior hunters: Lottery applications are being accepted for an apprentice deer hunt Sept. 14-15 on the 30,000-acre Chimineas Unit of the Carrizo Plain Ecological Reserve. Only hunters 15 and younger are eligible.
