Fresno State band dedicates performance to outgoing leader

Fresno State's outgoing President John Welty will get a melodious goodbye from the university's 65-member Wind Orchestra Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The Fresno State Wind Orchestra will dedicate its performance this week at the Los Angeles International Music Festival to Welty, who will retire from a 22-year career at California State University, Fresno on July 31.

Welty is known for attending band banquets and even inviting the entire band to his home, Fresno State Director of Bands Gary Gilroy said.

"He was truly a hands-on president, one whom the students knew and recognized," Gilroy said in a statement. "He interacted with the students on their level -- extremely rare for a man in his position."

During Welty's tenure, the university band program performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City and Orchestra Hall in Chicago.
