A Fresno State dean has been named the university's interim provost, replacing Provost William Covino, who will become the president of California State University, Los Angeles on Sept. 1.

University officials said Tuesday the College of Health and Human Services Dean Andrew Hoff will begin his new position Aug. 1.

"Dr. Hoff is a great campus citizen who is respected and admired by his colleagues," incoming Fresno State President Joseph Castro said in a statement. "He has an excellent grasp of academic affairs following his distinguished career at Fresno State."

Hoff, who was planning to retire this summer after three decades at Fresno State, has served in his current position since 2009. He also has worked as a professor and department chairman at the university. He received his bachelor's degree in geography from Fresno State and his Ph.D. in recreation and leisure at the University of Utah.

Castro said a committee will be formed soon to conduct a national search for Covino's permanent replacement.
