Sports briefs: Ex-Clovis star Jenna Prandini stars at NCAAs

Former Clovis High star Jenna Prandini qualified for the 100-meter final and with her Oregon teammates in the 400 relay as the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships opened Wednesday at the Ducks' Hayward Field in Eugene.

The freshman ran the 100 prelim in a wind-aided 11.14 seconds, an event in which Octavious Freeman of Central Florida was fastest at 10.99 and Oregon's English Gardner — the defending champ — second at 11.00. Prandini's previous best was 11.31.

Prandini and her teammates qualified a fifth-fastest 43.73 in the relay, with Texas A&M leading the way at 42.84. The meet runs through Saturday.

The Oregon women's team has been the national runner-up the past four seasons. Its lone title came in 1985.

B.J. Kelley (Central High) was part of an Oregon men's 400 relay that failed to qualify for the final while finishing 16th in the prelims in 39.89.

Bulldogs' Quinn earns freshman All-America honors in baseball

Fresno State right-hander Blake Quinn was named a Freshman All-American on Wednesday by Louisville Slugger after going 3-3 with a 3.02 ERA in his first season out of Bullard High.

He is the Bulldogs' 12th freshman All-American and first since outfielder Aaron Judge in 2011.

Quinn struck out 34 in 50 2/3 innings over 14 games, including eight starts, en route to being selected the co-Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year.

Also named to the Freshman All-American team from the Mountain West were San Diego State reliever Bubba Derby and New Mexico infielder Sam Haggerty.

Ex-Sunbird makes all-star team

Jesse Darrah — a former Fowler High and Fresno Pacific standout — is on the Eastern Division squad for minor league baseball's Midwest League All-Star Game.

The Dayton (Ohio) Dragons are hosting the game June 18 at Fifth Third Field.

Darrah, with the low-A South Bend (Ind.) SilverHawks in the Arizona Diamondbacks' organization, is 6-3 with a 3.00 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 60 innings over 11 starts this season. He is 3-0 with an 0.45 ERA in his past three starts.

An eighth-round pick in the June 2011 amateur draft, Darrah is 19-10 with a 4.21 ERA and 206 strikeouts in 239.1 innings during his three minor league seasons.

Fresno Pacific track and field stars earn Academic All-District honors

Fresno Pacific track and field standouts Milika Tuivanuavou (throws) and Dallas Nord (distance running) were named Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America and have advanced as West Region nominations for the Academic All-American team.

Tuivanuavou, the Academic All-American of the Year last season, is a senior Kinesiology major with a 3.72 GPA. Nord is a sophomore intercultural studies major with a 3.97 GPA.

Sunbirds sign 5 for water polo team

Area high school standouts Mikayla Scheer and Courtney Hall of Porterville and Clovis East's Kaitlin Fletcher are among five signings announced by the Fresno Pacific women's water polo team.

Caitlin Cook from Heritage-Brentwood and Jamine Harmon from Wailuku-Hawaii round out the 2014 recruiting class for the Sunbirds, who will join six other California schools in the Golden Coast Conference next season.

Rams sign with four-year schools

Fresno City College infielder Michael Tittle and pitcher Jake Martinez will continue their careers close to home.

Tittle will play at Sacramento State and Martinez at Fresno Pacific. Tittle hit .333 with 11 doubles and 18 RBIs in 2013. Martinez went 4-1 with two saves and a 2.78 ERA.
