ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Finishing with the top seed in the conference hasn't resulted in many Stanley Cups in recent seasons, but that isn't going to stop the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks from fighting tooth and nail to secure it.

After scorching starts from both, it appears to be a done deal that one of them will finish at the top of the Western Conference and secure home-ice advantage during pre-finals rounds of the postseason. On Wednesday, they went about deciding which team that would be as they faced off at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

In a fast-paced game worthy of the buildup for a showdown of teams with the most points in the NHL, the Ducks rallied for a 4-2 victory to snap the Hawks' three-game winning streak. Bobby Ryan and Teemu Selanne scored in the third period before Sheldon Souray hit an empty-netter before an Anaheim franchise-record crowd of 17,610. Peter Holland also scored and Jonas Hiller was strong in goal

The victory pulled the Ducks within three points of the Hawks in the West with a game in hand.

The Hawks dropped to 24-3-3 on the season as they failed to overcome the absences of standout forwards Marian Hossa and Patrick Sharp. Hossa missed the game after suffering an injury during Monday night's 5-2 victory over the Avalanche. The veteran is considered day to day with what a source said is a shoulder injury.

Jonathan Toews and Nick Leddy scored, but Corey Crawford couldn't hold off a relentless Ducks attack and suffered the loss.

The Ducks, who were playing without standout Corey Perry as the forward served the last of a four-game suspension, ran their overall points streak to 12 and won for the 13th consecutive time at home to improve to 22-3-4 overall this season.

The game marked the first time teams with points percentages above .800 met after 25 games of a season. The Hawks came in with a .879 percentage while the Ducks were second at .821.

"We probably didn't expect at the beginning of the year to be up here playing ... for the top spot in the Western Conference," Hiller said before the game. "Chicago has had an unbelievable start. We want to keep up with them."

After Holland put the Ducks up 1-0 just 1 minute 24 seconds into the game, Toews quickly answered with his second short-handed goal of the season when he raced into the offensive zone and tucked the puck past Hiller.

In the second, Leddy scored on his 22nd birthday when his shot from the point eluded Hiller while on the power play.

Late in the third, with the Hawks clinging to the lead, Ryan scored to even things at 2-2.

With the Ducks having a game in hand and another meeting between the teams looming next week at the United Center, the race figures to come down to the wire. Finishing as the No. 1 seed might mean a postseason schedule featuring more home games but it holds no guarantees. In the last 10 seasons, only three of the 20 teams to secure the top spot in the Eastern and Western conferences have gone on to win the Cup.

"The biggest thing we wanted to do coming into the year was to ensure we'd make the playoffs by winning our division," Hawks winger Patrick Kane said. "If we can do that and kind of see where we fall, hopefully in that top spot now that we're right there, we want to hold onto it."
