LOS ANGELES - During a four-game homestand that saw them play some of the better basketball of the season, the 76ers put together some impressive wins against teams like Indiana, Brooklyn and Portland.
But the brutal reality of where the Sixers stand in the NBA pecking order reared its ugly head again Wednesday night as the Los Angeles Clippers completed a season sweep at the Staples Center, rolling to a 101-72 win.
The Sixers loss extended their road losing streak to 14 games. They have not won away from the Wells Fargo Center since they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers on New Year's Day, and their road losing streak is the longest since they dropped 20 straight road games 25 years ago.
The Sixers (26-41) came into the game having won three of their last four games and were looking to win three straight for just the second time this season.
But the Clippers used a 12-for-19 shooting performance in the third quarter to take a 66-46 lead and they cruised the rest of the way.
Spencer Hawes led the Sixers with 16 points and added seven rebounds and seven assists. Thaddeus Young finished with 13 points and Evan Turner added 12 for the Sixers, who made just 36.7 percent of their shots from the field. Jrue Holiday scored just two points on 1-for-8 shooting.
The Clippers, who shot 52.6 percent from the field, were paced by Chris Paul's 19 points. Caron Butler added 14.
When the teams met on Feb. 11, the Sixers were no match for the Clippers, who were at the end of an eight-game, two-week road trip. The Clippers raced out to a 32-point lead and cruised to an easy 107-90 victory.
While that game was never really close, Wednesday's game was competitive early on until the Clippers began to assert themselves in the third quarter.
The Sixers opened up an 8-0 lead at the start of the game as the Clippers started slowly. However, Doug Collins' team was unable to sustain that lead and trailed by 46-36 at the end of the first half.
The game marked the first of four straight road games for the Sixers. On Thursday they will get their second look at Denver, their opening-night foe.
After two days of rest, the Sixers will resume their road trip with games at Sacramento on Sunday and Utah on Monday.
Notes. Former 76ers guard Maalik Wayns, cut twice this season by the Sixers, is playing for the Clippers. The former Villanova and Roman Catholic standout is on his second 10-day contract with the Clippers. Wayns finished with nine points. ... Sixers center Andrew Bynum underwent arthroscopic surgery on both of his knees on Tuesday. The surgery was performed by David Altchek at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
