There is a common thread that shapes political opinion as it appears not only in the radical right media, but sadly here in many of the letters to the editor. What is good government?

The definition of rational, responsible, and effective government: It supports benefits that accrue directly to me or to others that are similar to me. Also it doesn't interfere with any of my fundamental Constitutional freedoms even if that may cause harm to society as a whole. We sometimes have to pay a price for freedom (as long as it's not by me). The Constitution is the perfect document!

The definition of dysfunctional, bloated and out-of-control government: It supports benefits that accrue to others, but especially to those that are not similar to me. It also dangerously allows others freedoms that they claim are constitutional, but that I believe are destructive to society as a whole. If these freedoms are constitutional, then the Constitution should be amended!
