LOS ANGELES -- After an internal review, the Pasadena Police Department has concluded that officers responding to a robbery report acted lawfully and within department policy when they fatally shot a 19-year-old suspect who turned out to be unarmed.
The findings announced Wednesday in the shooting of Kendrec McDade echo the December conclusions of the Los Angeles County district attorney's office that officers acted in lawful defense of themselves and others.
Pasadena officers shot McDade during a nighttime encounter on March 24, 2012 after a man reported being robbed by two men who were armed.
The department said its review board considered tactics, patrol vehicle operation, radio communications and equipment before exonerating officers Jeffrey Newlen and Matthew Griffin.
The FBI and the county's Office of Independent Review are still investigating the shooting.
