The Tulare County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a 45-day moratorium prohibiting the expansion of medical marijuana collectives or the opening of new ones, county officials said.

The moratorium affects collectives, cooperatives and dispensaries in unincorporated areas.

The board action allows county staff to review and implement policies necessary because of recent court cases related to medical marijuana, officials said. The county also is concerned with possible safety issues linked to the collectives.

The county's existing ordinance requires that collectives must be on land zoned for the manufacturing of medical marijuana and be in fully enclosed structures.
