About 800 families received food and home supplies Tuesday morning in an effort to feed the needy organized by Fresno's Cornerstone Church.

The Rev. Jim Franklin said the church partnered with Feed The Children from Oklahoma City to distribute food and other goods. People began to arrive at the church parking lot near Broadway and Stanislaus Avenue about 9 a.m.

Cornerstone routinely distributes food to Fresno's needy but gets help from the nationwide organization once or twice a year, Franklin said.

"Poverty does not discriminate," Franklin said as he oversaw the distribution. "Black, or white or brown.

"They recognize that they are not alone."

Gloria Hurtado, who was waiting in line, said the distribution was a lifesaver. She found out about the project through her sister Connie Guzman.

"This will help me get through the month," Hurtado said.
