The Greek Life page on Fresno State's official website plays up the positive aspects of joining a fraternity or sorority: "Your experiences in the Greek community will help you build life-long skills and give you the academic support to be successful in college and beyond."
Our observations validate that appraisal. Greeks from Fresno State volunteer their talents to nonprofits, assist in fundraising efforts and blossom into community leaders.
The problem with the Fresno State website is that you must click through several other categories to learn about the deadly dark side of Greek life.
Halfway down the "Policies & Chapter Status" page is a list of three fraternities and one sorority disaffiliated from the university. Two of those severances stemmed from the alcohol-caused deaths of a student, Philip Dhanens, and a former student, Danny Ray Daniels, since 2006. Three other fraternities are under sanction.
Fresno State has tried to crack down on student drinking and hazing for more than a decade. But the message has been rejected by some social organizations. We recommend that Fresno State follow the lead of Elon University in North Carolina and prominently post something like this on its Greek Life web page:
