A distraught 16-year-old Visalia girl was arrested Tuesday after firing an airgun into the ground as police surrounded her, Visalia police said.

The incident took place about 1 p.m. in the area of Whitendale Avenue and Divisidero Street.

The girl's name was not released and police believe she may have mental health issues, Sgt. Amy Watkins said.

She was taken to Tulare County Juvenile Hall and could face charges of brandishing a replica firearm.
