Former Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra is progressing well to the treatment she is receiving at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital and has a strong appetite.

The 7-year-old mare remains at the hospital almost two weeks after having an abscess drained on March 7. She continues to walk and graze at Rood & Riddle where she is under the care of veterinarians Bonnie Barr and Brett Woodie.

According to the hospital's Twitter page, "Rachel continues to recover well! She is as feisty as ever!"

Rachel Alexandra foaled a filly on Tuesday, Feb. 12 and shortly afterward began experiencing complications. She was admitted into Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital the next day with excess fluid in her abdomen and had abdominal surgery performed Wednesday, Feb. 13.

She underwent exploratory abdominal surgery which discovered an infection. A damaged section of her small colon was surgically repaired.
