  Regarding the article about the turmoil in Orange Cove: Having worked in law enforcement in a small town, I feel for Chief Frank Steenport. When you work in small town, you are under very close scrutiny, and you have to maintain a balance between what the public needs and what the council or mayor wants. It is, at best, an "uphill battle," and frequently no matter what decision you make, it's the wrong one.

  Politics in small towns can be associated with third-world politics, where it's "do as I say, not as I do." Law enforcement is a difficult job, period, and if you throw politics into the mix, it actually makes it near impossible to do your job. I hope the chief prevails.
