United States men's national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann named his 23-man roster for the team's upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Costa Rica and Mexico on Monday, with the most notable omission being captain Carlos Bocanegra.
The 33-year-old has served as captain of the team since 2007, but he recently lost his starting job with Spanish second division side Racing.
Bocanegra was on the roster for the last qualifier against Honduras, a 2-1 defeat, although he didn't play in the match.
Veteran midfielder DaMarcus Beasley was recalled by Klinsmann, while the following eight players were unavailable to the coach through injury or illness: Edgar Castillo (facial fractures), Timmy Chandler (hamstring), Steve Cherundolo (knee), Tim Howard (back), Fabian Johnson (hip), Jonathan Spector (ankle), Jose Torres (hamstring) and Danny Williams (illness).
The U.S. will host Costa Rica on Friday, March 22 before traveling to Mexico on March 26 to face El Tri at the Azteca Stadium, where the Americans have yet to win a World Cup qualifier.
