  Should same-sex couples have the right to marry? That question was debated Tuesday before the U.S. Supreme Court, a debate that also sparked in Fresno a federal courthouse rally by supporters and a northeast Fresno forum by opponents.

  The rally participants included Slade Childers, 62, and his life partner of 37 years, who said they have been on an emotional roller coaster.

  The couple were not among the 18,000 same-sex couples who got married in May 2008 when California recognized same-sex marriage rights. The window slammed shut in November 2008 when California voters approved Proposition 8, which bans gay marriage.
