A 49-year-old Fresno man is dead after he skied off a trail at China Peak Mountain Resort on Saturday evening and hit a tree stump, the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said.

He was identified Sunday as Richard Sigle, according to the Fresno County Coroner's Office.

Deputies responded to a call from the ski resort around 5 p.m. about a man who had an accident and was not breathing, said Lt. Patrick Hanson.

The ski patrol performed CPR on the victim, but he died at the scene after emergency medical services personnel and deputies arrived, Hanson said.

"It appeared he may have hit a tree stump," Hanson said. "He had cracked his helmet. All indications are that it was an accident."

China Peak had no major injuries this year until Saturday's accident, owner Tim Cohee said on Sunday.

"It's just one of those unfortunate things" that happen, Cohee said.

The man was among a group of season-pass holders who were allowed to ski a little longer after the resort closed most of its lifts at 4 p.m., Cohee said.

He was coming down an intermediate run and transitioning onto a flat run when it looks like he failed to negotiate the turn and ended up in the woods. Both skis came off and the man hit a large tree stump, Cohee said.
