"The greatest motivational act one person can do for another is to listen." I don't know who said this, but I can't help but think of how this sentence speaks volumes to the power that one individual can have over another person. Today, you, yes you, may be the reason that somebody else has the motivation to get out of bed and live for another day.
The reason I'm talking about this is because I have recently taken the time to reflect on what I've done with my life in the past 12 years. In the year 2001, after completing high school, I contemplated suicide very seriously. What stopped me from going through with my plans? One person. What did they do? They took the time to listen to me. That's it. I had a one-hour conversation with this person, and it changed my entire perspective on life.
Here's the point of my letter: If you know someone who is depressed, hopeless, feeling "blue," sad or talking down on themselves, take the time to listen to them. You don't have to be an expert on communication, counseling or mental health to listen to someone.
