The normally innocently entertaining "Juice Crew" of Fresno's B95 radio station incited more than the need to dance during my morning commute to work on March 13. Andre Covington took a racially offensive stance against interracial dating.
Mr. Covington began his rant by criticizing fellow host Carmen for dating African-American men and accusing her of being "racially disrespectful." The show then turned overtly uncomfortable when the crew, along with several callers, began to endorse countless negative stereotypes pertaining to both Hispanic and African-American men.
On a positive note, Mr. Covington's "Juice Crew" counterparts, Greg and Carmen, openly rejected his views with talk of racial/ethnic tolerance and acceptance. Unfortunately, this would only be a brief display of goodwill as callers voiced reprehensible hate speech and the incitement of racial unrest.
I found these events unequivocally disturbing. Not only because I'm an African-American man; but I'm a husband in an interracial marriage and a father of a biracial child. I urge our community to take positive, educated and effective action. We should simply know better.
