A two-alarm fire in central Fresno displaced 21 people from an apartment complex, Battalion Chief Casey Clark said.

Firefighters arrived at 1530 E. Vassar Ave. after a 10:37 p.m. call and found everyone had safely escaped, but one occupant of the apartment where the fire started was trying to put it out, Clark said.

Another tenant pulled the man away.

Fire damaged four apartment units and water damaged three more in the two-story structure, Clark said.

It took 30 firefighters about 15 minutes to contain the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Six families were affected by the fire and the Red Cross was called to help them, the Fresno Fire Department said.
