Kapri Angotti drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth as Fresno State edged Kansas 3-2 in an opening-day game at the Capital Classic in Sacramento.

Jill Compton went the distance for the Bulldogs (16-11), allowing seven hits and two walks.

After Kansas (19-6) tied it in the top half, Whitney Smith drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on Maria Sio's sacrifice and scored when Angotti drove a liner through the right side.

In the third, Stesha Brazil erased a 1-0 deficit with a solo homer, her seventh.

"It was a great team effort today, and we manufactured some good runs late in the game," coach Trisha Ford said. "Obviously, Stesha's long ball helps. But the last run we manufactured, which is good, and what we have been working on a lot this last week."

Compton (7-8) settled down after giving up four hits in two innings. The Jayhawks entered with a nation-leading .400 average.

"Once (Compton) settled in she pitched well," said Ford, whose team faces Texas State and host Sacramento State today. "She knows what she is doing; it's just a matter of getting her to be calm and focused right out of the gate."
