SOFTBALL: FRESNO STATE AT CAPITAL CLASSIC TOURNAMENT

This weekend: Today, 10 a.m. vs. Kansas; Saturday, 11 a.m. vs. Texas State, 3 p.m. vs. Sacramento State; Sunday, 1 p.m. vs. Saint Mary's in Sacramento

Records: Bulldogs 15-11, Jayhawks 19-5, Bobcats 4-19, Hornets 12-6, Gaels 4-16

The skinny: Fresno State, led by sophomore OF Brenna Moss (.333, 11 RBIs, 6 triples, 19 for 20 SBs) runs into buzz saw at start. Kansas'.400 average leads nation, paced by twin sister OFs Maggie (.488, 4 HRs, 31 RBIs) and Rosie Hull (.500, 3, 12 in 15 games) and freshman C Alex Hugo (.463, 8, 30). Alicia Pille is 7-3, with 2.17 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 71 IP. ... Makenzie Wayadande (Redwood High) is 5 for 12 and Lauren Blair (Golden West) 2 for 11 in part-time duty for Hornets. ... Bulldogs have two wins over Saint Mary's, 4-0 on Jill Compton's no-hitter Feb. 23 at Santa Clara tourney and 8-0 this past Sunday in Fresno State Classic finale.

Records: Monsters 46-32-13, first in WSHL Western Division; Gulls 46-24-18, fourth

The skinny: Winners advance to divisional finals March 22-24. Division champs, host Idaho and team TBD move to Thorne Cup Finals on March 28-31 in McCall, Idaho.
