  I read with interest the Jan. 28 letter from Bill Lynam. I agree that school districts need educational options for students and parents. Not every student thrives in the comprehensive school mode of instruction.

  In my school district, Kings Canyon Unified, we are blessed to have several options of which students and their parents can choose. One of these options is the school where I serve, Kings Canyon High School. This high school allows students to learn in a smaller educational setting. They advance toward graduation while learning the skills needed to excel in institutions of higher education.

  Yes, options are needed so that each and every student will be able to complete graduation requirements, continue on with life-learning opportunities and become productive members of society. Thank you, KCUSD, for offering a safe, productive environment such as Kings Canyon High School.

  My father's favorite line is: "I agree with 98% of what people say. It's the last 2% that's the problem." I agree with the Children Now report that the Fresno Unified School District needs to address the expulsion policy and improve graduation rates, especially for students who live in a cycle of poverty or neglect (story March 8). But expelling students, then changing the expulsion to a suspension and transferring the students from one high school to another is not addressing the student's needs.

  Students who are expelled for drugs, gangs or fights, and students who are not on schedule to graduate need intervention, counseling and guidance to help them break the drop-out cycle and become productive members of society.

  Fresno Unified is providing this service but it needs to double, if not triple, the staff and attendance at continuation schools such as DeWolf. As a comparison, Clovis Unified has a student population of 39,000 and their continuation school, Gateway, has 380 students. Fresno Unified has

  Bullard rally celebrates Black History Month

  Students at Bullard High School kicked off Black History Month on Friday with a rally hosted by the BHS African-American Student Parent Advisory Group.

  The lunchtime rally in the school gymnasium featured cultural information, music and performances by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. The BHS Parent Advisory Group's goal is to expose students to culturally enriching activities and experiences on the Bullard campus, according to a Fresno Unified School District spokeswoman.

  February has been recognized as Black History Month since 1976 in the United States.

  Reform Fresno Unified and Bullard parents complain of a "brain drain," taking away their best students.

  The solution is simple -- dismantle Manchester GATE and Edison Computech. Use the money, resources, and special programs that are now being given to these schools to improve the rest of the district's schools. If your neighborhood school has what you want, there is no need to go elsewhere.

  All parents want their local school to offer what these two schools give, not just those in northwest Fresno.
