Chan finishes first in men's short program

Patrick Chan placed first in the men's competition of Wednesday's short program at the World Figure Skating Championships.

Chan, who is vying for his third straight men's world figure skating title, earned a score of 98.37.

Kazakhstan's Denis Ten placed second with a score of 91.56, while Kevin Reynolds of Canada finished in third with a score of 85.16.

Japan's Daisuke Takahashi, the 2010 world champion and 2012 runner-up, and Brian Joubert of France rounded out the top five with scores of 84.67 and 84.17, respectively.

American Max Aaron finished eighth.
