Fresno's high of 85 degrees Wednesday set a new record for the date, and more record-setting temperatures could be in store for Thursday, the National Weather Service reported.

The previous record high of 84 degrees was set in 2007.

Thursday's forecast high of 85 would be two degrees above the all-time high for the date set in 2007, meteorologist Modesto Vasquez said.

The warmer temperatures are due to a strong ridge of high pressure centered off the coast of Southern California that covers the entire state and extends into Oregon, Vasquez said.

More spring-like temperatures are forecast to return by Friday, when a high of 81 is forecast for Fresno, he said.
