Two men will stand trial on six counts of attempted murder for a gang-related shooting at Visalia Mall in which two people were injured, including a bystander.
Anthony Hanson and Adrian Esquer, both 19 and Visalia residents, face life in prison if found guilty on all counts.
The charges include special allegations of use of a firearm and gang enhancement, which results in longer prison sentences upon a conviction.
After a two-day preliminary hearing that ended Monday, Tulare County Superior Court Judge Brett Alldredge ordered them to stand trial.
Four of the charges involve "willful, deliberate and premeditated" attempted murder, the Tulare County District Attorney's Office said.
The charges stem from an incident that erupted about 7 p.m. on Jan. 27, 2012, when gunfire broke out in the area of the Sweet Factory candy store.
Bystander Steven Haynes, 21, was shot in the leg, and Miguel Delarosa Alcala, 21, was shot in the neck. Both survived.
The altercation took place after a chance encounter between members of two rival gangs, police said.
Esquer fired the gun and shot Haynes and Alcala, Assistant District Attorney Anthony Fultz said. Within the line of fire were three people with Alcala and a candy store employee, he said.
Esquer faces a maximum sentence of 402 years to life in prison, while Hanson faces 342 years to life in prison.
But Hanson is innocent, Tulare County Deputy Public Defender Roland Soltesz said.
"Mr. Hanson had no idea what was going to happen," Soltesz said. "He didn't do anything other than stand there and run away when the shooting started."
Soltesz said the shooting appeared to have been provoked. Two of the people involved had knives, and one of them hid his knife in bushes outside when he ran from the mall, Soltesz said.
Hanson and Esquer will be arraigned on April 3.
