The town that boasts its Friday night lights is getting some recognition for it.
Last month, the Sanger Unified School District athletic fields crew was recognized with the Fields of Excellence award from Pioneer Athletics for its hard work and dedication to Tom Flores Stadium.
The field crew submitted its field design from the high school's homecoming game last season that featured a giant 15-yard by 15-yard red "S" painted at midfield and red-white checkerboard end zones.
The crew -- Martin Collins, Pablo Mora, Kelli Gipson and Chris Lozano -- has more than 40 years of combined experience working the athletic fields.
The four are responsible for all the athletic fields in the district.
Tom Flores Stadium, named after the Sanger quarterback who went on to a standout career as a player and coach with the Oakland Raiders, was one of 73 Fields of Excellence nationwide and the only winner from the central San Joaquin Valley.
In a small town where everybody knows everybody, the fields crew takes pride in providing the best playing fields for the community -- staying after hours to paint and pay attention to the slightest of details.
"We do it for the community, we do it for the kids. We want to make them proud," Gipson said.
Mora said the crew isn't done crafting elaborate designs into Tom Flores Stadium, or any other field in the district for that matter.
"We're always striving for that perfect field," Mora said. "We haven't got it yet, but we're getting there."
