A fire that started in the attic caused heavy damage to a home northeast of Madera on Monday, officials said.

The fire was reported just before noon at 21844 Road 30, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. The blaze started in the attic and spread throughout the house, battalion chief Jim Forga said.

The crew contained the fire about 4 p.m., Forga said. Damage was estimated at $300,000. The cause remains under investigation.
