What started as a promising series for Fresno State ended in another sweep.
The Bulldogs baseball team concluded a four-game series against Cal with an 8-4 loss Sunday in Berkeley.
Fresno State (3-12) gave up three runs in the first inning, eventually tied the game, but coughed up four runs in the seventh to suffer its second series sweep already this season. The Bulldogs haven't been swept twice in a series since 2009.
Fresno State went through six pitchers Sunday and allowed 13 hits, six walks and two hit batters.
Junior Tyler Stirewalt got the loss, surrendering four runs on three hits and two walks in the seventh inning.
Starting pitcher Derick Velazquez gave up four runs on five hits and three walks before he was yanked after two innings.
First baseman Trent Garrison was one of the Bulldogs' few bright spots, going 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI. His RBI single to left in the fifth inning tied the game at 4-4.
Fresno State began this series at Cal (9-7) with a 5-4 loss in 10 innings. The Bulldogs then lost 8-1 and 4-3 leading into Sunday.
Sunbirds men get top basketball seed
The Fresno Pacific men's basketball team received the top seed in the NCCAA Tournament.
No. 1 Fresno Pacific (20-7) will host No. 8 Roberts Wesleyan (8-19) at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday in Winona Lake, Ind.
The Sunbirds gained an automatic bid in the tournament after beating Azusa Pacific 109-105 to capture the West Region championship.
Roberts Wesleyan, which is based in New York, lost five straight before winning the East Regional championship and earning a bid into the NCCAA Tournament. Fresno Pacific and Roberts Wesleyan are among the four teams in the eight-team field that are making a transition to full-time NCAA Division II status.
Big day for Bulldogs golfers
Fresno State's Troix Tonkham brought home the individual title at the Bandon Dunes Championship at the Old McDonald Course in Bandon, Ore., while teammate Rufie Fessler finished second at the 18-team tournament.
Tonkham's 6-under total over three rounds (70-71-69) topped Fessler by three strokes and vaulted the Bulldogs into second place overall. Colorado (2 under) beat the Bulldogs by five strokes for the team title.
Tonkham, a freshman from Ventura, recorded 13 birdies over the two days.
"Any win in college is good, but this win by Troix was spectacular," head coach Mike Watney said. "His composure for a freshman was amazing. We haven't had a freshman like that since Nick Watney."
Bulldogs fall to Denver in lacrosse
Despite senior Paula Badali's three goals, the Fresno State lacrosse team dropped its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season opener 18-7 at Denver.
Katie Wilbur made 17 saves for the Bulldogs, breaking the Fresno State record for most saves in a single game.
After wrapping up their four-game road trip at 1-3, the Bulldogs return home to face Cal on March 19 at 5 p.m.
