It's all starting to come together.

That's what first-year coach Trisha Ford is hoping for from the Fresno State softball team after winning two of three at the Fresno State Classic this weekend.

First, there was Fresno State's rally from a five-run deficit on Thursday, along with late-game heroics to beat Iowa State 7-6.

Then, Fresno State had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning before falling 1-0 to sixth-ranked Cal on Saturday.

On Sunday, the Bulldogs showed little signs of letting up by scoring four runs in the first en route to an 8-0 victory against Saint Mary's to conclude the tournament at Bulldog Diamond. It was Fresno State's first victory this season that ended early because of the eight-run mercy rule.

Could it be the confidence booster that gets the Bulldogs rolling?

"We're young," Ford said. "It's kind of taken that maturation process. But they're starting to feel good and working well together. And our pitching is getting better.

"It was important more for them to see what they're capable of doing and building on that."

Maybe the most important sign for Ford and Fresno State (15-11) is the development being shown by the young pitching staff.

Freshman Hannah Harris was the latest young pitcher to step up, allowing just three hits while recording her first shutout and second complete game.

A day earlier, freshman Jill Compton mystified one of the nation's best teams in Cal for six innings before she finally allowed a hit in the seventh, which also turned out to be a home run that wiped away the shutout.

And in the victory against Iowa State, freshman Taylor Langdon helped the Bulldogs get back on track by attacking the strike zone in the rain for two innings in relief and picked up the win.

None of the three pitchers are strikeout artists, generating just a combined 68 in 170 2/3 innings pitched. But Ford has preached to them to keep the ball down and command both sides of the plate -- just as Harris showed Sunday.

"I'm hoping it's starting to click," Ford said. "They've had a few games under their belt, watch film and know their tendencies."

Fresno State, meanwhile, got strong offensive production from left fielder Michelle Solomon and designated hitter Kapri Angotti, who combined to go 5 for 6 with two runs and five RBIs. Solomon, the Bulldogs' cleanup hitter, homered to center in the third.

"It felt good to come out and get a win like this after (Saturday) night," Solomon said. "We were able to put runs on the board that we should've put on last night. We saw our potential this weekend and we can compete with anyone when we play our game."
