Kyle Coppom's only hit of the day was an RBI single that capped a two-run sixth as Fresno Pacific beat visiting Azusa Pacific 3-2 en route to a split of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader Saturday.

J.D. Salles (4-1) allowed four walks and four hits in 7 1/3 innings -- including a two-run home run by Cougars cleanup hitter Daniel Gonzales in the first -- while striking out seven.

Josh Medeles escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the eighth and allowed just a hit in the ninth while earning the save.

Right fielder Devin Lee made a diving catch of Dusty Sanderson's liner with a runner on in the ninth to preserve the win.

Azusa bounced back to win the second game 2-0, as senior left-hander Michael Finnigan (1-2) pitched a seven-inning two-hitter.

Fresno Pacific had a final shot in the seventh after John Koretoff drew a leadoff walk and Matt Fox hit a one-out pinch-hit single.

Finnigan got Steven Moon to pop out and struck out Bobby Mendoza.

Sunbirds starter Wilson Ashford (2-1) gave up seven hits and two runs in three innings. Mitchell Scott starred in middle relief, allowing a hit and a walk in 2 1/3 innings while striking out three.

The Sunbirds (11-6, 6-2 PacWest) took 3 of 4 overall in a series that featured a home-and-home set of doubleheaders the past two weekends. The Cougars are 4-14 and 2-6.
