Ten high school students from Rep. Jim Costa's congressional district were nominated for admission to one of the service academies, his office said.
Members of Congress can make nominations for admission consideration to the service academies.
The nominees are:

Merchant Marine: Tyson Edward Coffey, Buhach Colony, Atwater; Hireri (Hilary) Martinez, Duncan Polytechnical, Fresno.
Navy: Mary Kathryn Stammer, Lemoore; Cyril Nafarrete Pascual, Lemoore; Olivia Christina Czerewko, Lemoore (also Merchant Marine); Logan D. Cunning, Lemoore.
Madera Co. to host academic pentathlon
Nearly 150 students from Madera County middle schools will put their minds to the test next weekend when they compete in this year's Academic Pentathlon Super Quiz at Ranchos Middle School.
Twenty-five teams will participate in five events: a math tournament, essay competition, speech event, literature test and super quiz. Schools are allowed one seventh and one eighth grade team.
The super quiz topic is "Physical Principals, Structure and Function." The event begins at 11:15 a.m Saturday.
Participating schools are Coarsegold Elementary, Dairyland Elementary, Jack G. Desmond Middle, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle, North Fork Digital Middle, Oak Creek Intermediate, Ranchos Middle, Rivergold Elementary, Sherman Thomas Charter, Spring Valley, St. Joachim, Thomas Jefferson Middle, and Wasuma Elementary.
Fresno Co. to discuss general plan Tuesday
The Fresno County Board of Supervisors has a public workshop scheduled Tuesday to discuss the county's general plan.
The plan is designed as a guide for future development in the county, and county planners are proposing a number of revisions.

New Reedley charter seeking applications
Friday is the deadline for students from Fresno County and surrounding areas to apply to the Reedley Middle College Charter High School, Reedley College said.
The school focuses on the business field with an agriculture and technology emphasis and will be open to freshman and sophomores for the academic year beginning in August. Students will attend school on the college campus with no extra fees and can accumulate college credits.
Applications are available at the Reedley Middle College High School, all Kings Canyon Unified School District middle schools, the KCUSD District Office and at www.kcusd.com. Complete applications must be turned in to the high school's office, 995 N. Reed Ave.
Lanes closed for work near Coalinga
Road maintenance will cause lane closures Tuesday through Friday on Highway 33 near Coalinga.
On Tuesday, construction workers will begin pavement repairs at the T- intersection of Alpine Avenue at Jayne Avenue.
Construction on Tuesday will be 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. and will resume Wednesday from 7 a.m. through Friday 6 p.m.
During the project, there will be reversing lane closures south of Jayne Avenue at this intersection.
Tulare First 5 seeks hero nominations
The First 5 organization in Tulare County is accepting nominations in five categories until noon Monday for the annual Hands-On Hero Awards.
The categories are health and wellness, early care and education, parent education/strong families, behavioral health and exceptional volunteer.
