Fresno police officers, aided by the department's Skywatch helicopter, apprehended a 21-year-old man suspected of stealing a car and then fleeing during an arrest attempt early Saturday.

A woman called police shortly after midnight, saying she was near Fresno City College and following her car, which had been stolen, police said. The Skywatch crew located the car and illuminated it with a spotlight as the vehicle traveled south on Blackstone Avenue.

Officers stopped the car near Community Regional Medical Center and ordered the driver to get out. Instead, the suspect sped off. At Ventura and R streets, the driver tried to make a left turn and smashed the car through a fence, hitting a pole.

The driver tried to run away with the helicopter's spotlight on him but quickly surrendered to officers. He was arrested on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.
