CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The NCAA investigation is over and the University of Miami is preparing its defense. In the meantime, multiple legal issues swirl surrounding the landmark case.

Separate investigations into an attorney involved in the case and the NCAA as a governing body are in the planning stages. News leaked Friday of a federal court inquiry into the dealings Nevin Shapiro's bankruptcy attorney had with the NCAA.

Federal judge and Miami law school grad Federico A. Moreno wants to know if attorney Maria Elena Perez's relationship with the NCAA was ethical, the Associated Press reported. Perez, also a Miami law grad, said he received notice of the investigation Thursday. She had no further comment when contacted by the Sun Sentinel on Friday.

Perez received payment from the NCAA to help gain testimony from key figures in the Miami case while under oath. She continues to say she did nothing wrong in the matter.

Meanwhile, in Tallahassee, state senator Joseph Abruzzo, D-Wellington, said he's still working with the attorney general's office on a possible investigation into the NCAA. He met with AG Pam Bondi for an hour Thursday to further discuss his assertions that the NCAA violated fair trade laws with its two-year investigation of Miami.

She is reviewing the 55-page public report detailing the NCAA's internal investigation into its handling of the Miami case.

"The AG did not brush it off," Abruzzo said Friday. "We had an engaged meeting and she wants to get all the facts."

Messages left with Bondi's office went unreturned Friday. They plan to meet again as early as next week, Abruzzo said.
