Farmersville falls in soccer regional
Despite outshooting second-seeded Sun Valley 13-4 and controlling 60%-70% of the possessions -- according to Farmersville coach Michael Jordan -- the third-seeded Aztecs lost 1-0 in a CIF Southern California Regional Division III boys soccer semifinal Thursday.
David Flores scored the only goal, his 38th, in the 21st minute after visiting Farmersville (23-5-3) had one shot go off the post and two others saved by the goalkeeper.
The Aztecs, the last Central Section team alive in the regionals, had a goal by Ramon Franco in the 61st minute waved off for offsides.
Sun Valley (25-0) faces Animo Leadership-Inglewood at 1 p.m. Saturday for the title.
BASEBALL
-- McCarthy Tatum pitched a complete game and drove in two runs as section fourth-ranked Clovis defeated No. 8 Stockdale 5-3 in an opener at the Central California Showcase for coach James Patrick's 599th career win. The 28-year coach will attempt to join retired Mike Noakes (708) and active Ken Papi (610) in the section's 600-win club today, when the Cougars host Redlands at 4:30 p.m.
-- Kyle Dauer fired a three-hitter, leading the host Grizzlies to a 5-0 victory over Hanford at the Central Classic. Josh Acosta pitched a two-hitter with 13 strikeouts, and Gabe Solorio singled in a run in the bottom of the seventh as Fresno edged Hanford West 1-0.

-- Clair Zelasko hit the first out-of-the-park home run in school history during the sixth inning to help Sierra defeat Minarets 9-6.
