A Fresno police officer escaped serious injury Thursday morning after being dragged about 60 feet by a fugitive in an SUV that crashed into a house, rupturing a gas line or meter.

Police Lt. Don Gross said the incident began just before 8 a.m. on Fremont Avenue just east of Chestnut Avenue, north of Fresno State.

Officers were in the neighborhood checking on a suspicious vehicle carrying a man, a woman and a child when they learned the man was sought on an out-of-state warrant.

The woman and the child were out of the vehicle when the officers tried to take the man into custody. He jumped behind the wheel of the SUV. An officer tried to stop the man from driving away and was holding onto the wheel as the SUV began to move.

As the two fought for control of the vehicle, it rolled about 60 feet and slammed into a house, severing a gas line or meter. The two officers then subdued the suspect with an electronic stun gun as other police vehicles sped to the neighborhood.

Officers also called for help from the fire department and from utility workers to shut off the gas line.

The officer who was dragged was treated at Saint Agnes Medical Center for cuts and scrapes and released, Gross said. The second officer also sustained minor injuries but did not go to a hospital.
