SoCal Regional playoffs roundup: March lifts Immanuel to victory

Zoe March made five free throws over the final two minutes to help No. 11-seeded Immanuel High hold off No. 6 Flintridge Prep-La Cañada 53-46 in the opening round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division V girls basketball playoffs Wednesday in Reedley.

March finished with 10 points, nine assists and three rebounds for the Eagles, who play at No. 3 View Park-Los Angeles at 7 p.m. Saturday in the regional quarterfinals.

Immanuel also received 12 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks from Olivia Sorensen and 13 points and 11 rebounds from Shandon Ledbetter.

Also in D-V, No. 15 Kings Christian (16-9) forfeited its game against No. 2 Sierra Canyon-Chatsworth (20-9) because only five of its eight players were healthy enough to play.

DIVISION III

No. 8 Calabasas 67, No. 9 Selma 63: Alex Webb's 15-foot jumper with 1:11 remaining put the Coyotes ahead for good at 63-62, and Megan Charles scored the final four points from the free-throw line.

Charles finished with a game-high 36 points for Calabasas (21-9) to help offset the balanced scoring attack led by Julie Jarquin (18 points) for the Bears (30-3).

No. 10 Santa Barbara 65, No. 7 Hanford West 54: Kalia Parker scored 20 points but the Huskies (27-7) were eliminated by the Dons (24-8).

Boys

DIVISION II

No. 8 Hanford West 68, No. 9 Mira Costa-Manhattan Beach 59: Josue Salaam added to his school career-leading scoring total with 27 as the Huskies (20-12) advanced to the second round with a homecourt win over the Mustangs (21-11).

Hanford West, coming off an 88-84 double overtime win over Garces for the section D-II title, plays Saturday at top-seeded J.W. North-Riverside (29-3).

DIVISION III

No. 7 Damien-La Verne 74, No. 10 Mission Oak 72 OT: Blake Shannon hit a halfcourt shot as time expired in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but the Spartans got a 3-pointer at the buzzer of the extra period.

Shannon had 26 points for Mission Oak (27-5), which trailed 46-33 entering the fourth quarter.

No. 2 Chaminade-West Hills 83, No. 15 Mt. Whitney 41: The Pioneers (18-11) trailed 32-6 after the first quarter and never threatened.

Dannon Frigulti and Colton Dahlenburg each scored 10 points for Mt. Whitney.

DIVISION IV

No. 14 Saint Joseph-Santa Maria 77, No. 3 Exeter 49: The Knights (23-8) jumped out to a 17-1 lead and led 24-9 by the end of the first quarter behind six 3-pointers from Case Bruton. Caleb Nickell's 15 points led the Monarchs (23-7).

DIVISION V

No. 9 Trinity Classical Academy-Valencia 63, No. 8 Tranquillity 49: The Tigers trailed by three at the end of the first quarter, but were outscored 36-19 in the second and third.

Angel Torres, Jonathan Avalos and Alexis Garcia all scored nine points to pace Tranquillity (11-14).
