Farmersville High's boys emerged as the last Central Section team standing after the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional soccer playoffs.

The third-seeded Aztecs shook off a bad case of nerves to defeat sixth-seeded Chadwick-Palos Verdes Peninsula 3-0 on Tuesday in Division III.

Farmersville coach Michael Jordan said his team was wound so tight that they struggled performing simple pregame drills such as traps, passes and shots.

"They weren't calm at all," Jordan said.

All that changed in the 22nd minute, when Pedro Berber scored off a pass from German Gutierrez.

"When we got that goal, you could see something special in the guys' eyes," Jordan said. "They had that killer instinct."

Freddie Vasquez scored on a penalty kick in the 61st minute and Isaac Alvarez took a long ball from Vasquez and scored on a breakaway in the 71st minute to send the Aztecs (23-4-3) to a 4 p.m. semifinal Thursday at No. 2 Sun Valley (24-0). The Wildcats opened with a 5-3 win over Lennox Academy-Lennox.

The Central Section's six other regional qualifiers all lost over the past two days, including Caruthers' girls, which saw St. Bonaventure-Ventura end the Blue Raiders' 28-0 season with a 2-0 win in D-III.
