Jenn Suhr (Fredonia, N.Y.) set the indoor pole vault world record as she cleared 5.02 meters/16-5.50 feet to capture the 2013 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships title on March 2 in Albuquerque, N.M. Meanwhile, Will Leer (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Mary Cain (Bronxville, N.Y.) claimed the men's and women's 1,600-meter titles, and Ryan Whiting (Harrisburg, Pa.) won the men's shot put.
CLEAN SWEEP
Josh Farris (Renton, Wash.) posted a score of 228.32 to headline Team USA's podium sweep at the 2013 World Junior Figure Skating Championships on March 2 in Milan. Joining Farris on the podium were Jason Brown (Highland Park, Ill.) and Shotaro Omori (La Mirada, Calif.), who claimed silver and bronze. Samantha Cesario (Oceanside, N.Y.) was the top U.S. female finisher in fourth place, while Haven Denney (Ocala, Fla.) and Brandon Frazier (Tampa, Fla.) won their first world junior pairs title.
BIATHLON
Tim Burke (Paul Smiths, N.Y.) led Team USA at the world cup event on March 2-3 in Oslo, Norway, placing fourth in the 15-kilometer mass start and a 15th in the 12.5K pursuit. Lowell Bailey (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished 27th in the mass start and 34th in the pursuit.
CYCLING
Dominique Daniels (Gilbert, Ariz.) defended her 2012 collegiate BMX national championship on March 2 at the Black Mountain BMX track in Phoenix. Representing Marian University, Justin Posey (Winston Salem, N.C.) held off a pair of riders from Lindsey Wilson College to win the national title and lead the Knights to the team championship.
EQUESTRIAN
Kent Farrington (Chicago, Ill.) and Blue Angel won and Beezie Madden (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and Cortes 'C' finished second at the $150,000 CSIO 4* Wellington Grand Prix on March 3 in Wellington, Fla. Earlier in the week, Farrington and Madden teamed with Reed Kessler (Armonk, N.Y.) and Laura Kraut (Oconomowoc, Wis.) to win the FEI Nations Cup on March 1.
FENCING
Mariel Zagunis (Beaverton, Ore.) and Ibtihaj Muhammad (Maplewood, N.J.) finished first and second at the saber world cup on March 1 in Bologna, Italy. Zagunis defeated Muhammad, 15-9, in the final to win her second straight gold.
FIELD HOCKEY
In Craig Parnham's coaching debut, the U.S. women's field hockey team opened the IHF World League Round 2 with a 6-0 win over Brazil on March 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Claire Laubach (Centerville, Va.) started the scoring in the 38th minute, and added a second goal later in the game.
GYMNASTICS
Jake Dalton (Reno, Nev.) and Katelyn Ohashi (Plano, Texas) captured the men's and women's all-around titles at the 2013 AT&T American Cup on March 2 in Worcester, Mass. Simone Biles (Spring, Texas) finished just behind Ohashi in second.
Alex McMurtry (Midlothian, Va.) earned top all-around honors at the 2013 Nastia Liukin Cup on March 1 in Worcester, Mass. McMurtry rallied from behind to claim the title, performing nearly flawlessly on the final three rotations.
SKI & SNOWBOARD
Laurenne Ross (Bend, Ore.) raced to her first career podium in the women's downhill, finishing second at the FIS World Cup on March 2 in Garmisch- Partenkirchen, Germany. Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, Calif.) finished third in the super-G, setting up a final race showdown with Slovenia's Tina Maze for the title. Mancuso also finished fourth in the super combined.
Travis Ganong (Squaw Valley, Calif.) led Team USA in the wind-shortened downhill at the FIS World Cup on March 2 in Kvitfjell, Norway. Ganong finished 16th, while Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) and Andrew Weibrecht (Lake Placid, N.Y.) finished tied for 18th in the super-G.
