Led by Gabriel Gonzalez's fifth-place finish at 195 pounds, Washington captured the Small Schools team title at Saturday's CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield.

The Panthers scored 30 points, two more than runner-up Calvary Chapel-Santa Ana, a private school and seven-time state overall champion.

The title is for schools with enrollments of fewer than 1,000 students.

Gonzalez scored 21 of the Panthers' points by getting a decision and five pins, including a fall in 1:35 over James Logan's Clayton Hartwell in the fifth-place match.

Gonzalez was one of 29 state medalists the Central Section produced during its first season of advancing nine qualifiers per weight class, a group that includes champions Adrian Camposano of Central (106 pounds), Porterville's Mason Pengilly (120), Lemoore's Isaiah Martinez (160), and Clovis' Adrian Salas (182) and Nick Nevills (285).

The section had 31 medalists and four champions last year when it advanced eight automatic qualifiers.
