-- Hanford's girls, state-ranked last week before losing at Clovis West in the section semis, were left out of the SoCal D-I field. This despite pounding that field's No. 4 seed, Narbonne-Harbor City, 60-38 in late December.

-- Ridgeview's girls got exactly what Bullard's boys didn't -- an escape from the Open Division and a top seed in their own, in this case D-II.

Roosevelt, Buchanan to host in soccer regionals

Seven section teams made the SoCal Regionals in soccer, including Roosevelt's boys and Buchanan's girls.

Roosevelt (21-1-3), making its second regional appearance, received a No. 3 seed in D-II and a 4 p.m. home match today against No. 6 San Jacinto (23-2-3) of the Southern Section.

Buchanan (18-4-1), advancing for the fifth time in the six-year history of the regionals, received a No. 4 seed and a 4 p.m. home match Tuesday against No. 5 El Camino Real-Woodland Hills (18-4-3).

No section boys or girls team has ever captured a regional title.

Avenal (D-III, 2008), Bullard (D-I, '09), Buchanan (D-I, '11), Lindsay (D-II, '12) and McFarland (D-III, '12) have reached the final on the boys side; Buchanan (D-I, '09) and Bullard (D-I '11) on the girls.

Open season

The following criteria were utilized to select the teams for the Open Division for the CIF State Basketball Tournament. A school needs to satisfy only one of the criteria below to be considered:

-- A school must have won two consecutive section basketball championships; or a school must have qualified for the regional championships for three of the past four years.

-- A school qualifies for the second straight year after competing in the state or regional final the previous year.

-- A school qualifying for their regional playoffs may request to be placed in the open division.

-- A school was ranked in the Top Ten of Cal Hi Basketball, Cal Preps and/or MaxPreps Rankings (early March) the past two years (current year and previous year).

EVALUATION TOOL

-- A school's strength of schedule will be used to evaluate the strength of the program (regional or national type of schedule).

ENTRY CAP

-- No more than four teams may be selected from any one of the 10 sections.

-- Sections may choose to replace selected teams in the division from which they were selected.
