The Fresno State softball team used two big innings Saturday night to beat Utah State 9-6 at the San Diego Classic I.

The Bulldogs went ahead 4-0 in the first inning on right fielder Michelle Solomon's grand slam, fell behind 6-4 and then scored five in the fifth to cap off scoring.

Solomon, batting fourth, cleaned up in the first after Brenna Moss led off with a single and stole second, Diane Runge walked and Stesha Brazil singled.

But then Fresno State's offense went silent while Utah State mounted two three-run innings to go ahead.

But Runge got things buzzing again in the fifth with a leadoff bunt single. Brazil singled, they moved up on a double steal and Solomon, a sophomore from Beaumont, hit an RBI single and stole second.

Paige Gumz hit a two-run double, and Whitney Smith put down an RBI squeeze bunt that Utah State made an error on, allowing the final run to score.

The Bulldogs finish play in the tournament today, with games scheduled against Long Beach State at 10 a.m. and University of San Diego at 12:30 p.m.

Fresno State comes home to host its own tournament Thursday-Sunday at Bulldog Diamond. Fresno State is scheduled to play Iowa State, No. 12 Oregon, Oregon State, No. 7 Cal and Saint Mary's.

Track and field: Three 'Dogs win events

Fresno State's John Jamieson, Devon Harrison and Derek Oliver won events to highlight the Bulldogs' day at the Stanford Opener non-scoring outdoor meet.

Jamieson ran the 800 meters in 1 minute, 53.15 seconds, nearly a second ahead of runner-up Timothy Luthin of Stanford.

Harrison long-jumped 23 feet, 71/2 inches to win over Jonte Grant (unattached), who had a best of 23-61/4.

And Oliver, competing in a four-man hammer throw field that included teammate Kory Stephens, had a best of 200-6. Stephens was third with 175-1.

Cameron Parker finished second in the 100, running a 10.84 to winner Dash Oliver of Cal's 10.73.

Harrison had the second-best time among 15 runners in the 200, clocking a 21.81. Cal's Tom Blocker (21.62) was fastest.

Eighteen Bulldogs men and four Fresno State women competed. The Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday when they host Cal Poly in a dual at Buchanan High.

Men's tennis: Coaches fall in round of 16

The run by Fresno State coaches David Ayoun and Evan Austin in the 124th annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in La Jolla ended Saturday in the round of 16.

The Stanford team of Denis Lin and John Morrissey beat the coaches 6-0, 6-2.

The open amateur tournament features mostly college players.

The Bulldogs duos of Sai Kartik Nakireddi-Felipe Fritz and Reid deLaubenfels-Sam MacNeil each reached the second round Friday before being eliminated.

Fresno State's third doubles team, Nikolas Papic and Jeremy Quiroz, lost in the first round Friday and then was eliminated in a consolation round.
