Thumbs down

Thumbs down to Rep. Tom McClintock, a Republican whose sprawling 4th District extends into the Valley and includes Mariposa County, as well as parts of Fresno and Madera counties. McClintock voted against the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013. With his vote against legislation that has helped reduce domestic violence, McClintock showed, once again, that he favors his out-of-touch personal views ahead of district and national needs.

Thumbs up

Thumbs up to Fresno-based American Medical Overseas Relief. It distributed care packages to 1,600 children living in camps on the outskirts of Kabul, Afghanistan. Families received food, and each child was given a winter coat, waterproof boots and two pairs of socks. Many of the children previously wore flip-flops and T-shirts.

Thumbs down

Thumbs down to the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation for its 25% water allocation to west San Joaquin Valley farmers. There are several steps the Bureau could take immediately to make the allotment 40% without harming Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta fish populations.

Thumbs up

Thumbs up to Reps. Jim Costa, D-Fresno; Jeff Denham, R-Turlock; Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield; Devin Nunez, R-Tulare; and David Valadao, R-Hanford. They voted for the Violence Against Women reauthorization. Costa serves as co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus.
