The day started on a good note for the Fresno State softball team. It ended on a sour one.

Stesha Brazil hit a two-run walk-off home run to lead the Bulldogs to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over Brigham Young in an opening-round game Friday at the San Diego Classic.

Fresno State (11-9) then managed just three hits in losing 7-1 to No. 12 UCLA.

BYU scored three in the top of the first of the opener, but Brenna Moss cut the deficit when she singled, stole a base and scored on an error in the bottom half. Moss had two steals in the game for a team-leading 14.

BYU made it 4-1 in the second, but Fresno State responded with single runs in the third and fourth.

Still down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Moss led off with a single, moved to second on a bunt by Diane Runge and jogged home on Brazil's blast.

Jill Compton pitched five innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Compton, a freshman leading the team in wins, got the start against the Bruins and pitched gamely. She went three innings and allowed two hits. One of the two runs against her was unearned, but she fell to 6-6 on the year.

UCLA's Paige McDuffee (5-0) pitched the three-hitter and B.B. Bates hit her 12th home run and drove in four for the Bruins (14-2).

Equestrian team sweeps

The Fresno State equestrian team swept New Mexico State and South Dakota State, two teams that share the No. 10 national ranking.

The Bulldogs won 9-6 and 13-3 and had eight most outstanding player awards.

Senior Kimberly HewsonBudnik won all four of her matchups. In Equitation over Fences, she earned MOP honors against both teams. Other standouts: Lauren Crivelli in Horsemanship and Reining; Kirsten McKilliop in Reining and in Horsemanship; Dayle Fischer, Flat; and Macy Wilson, Flat.

Tennis coaches chase title

Fresno State coaches David Ayoun and Evan Austin will play today in the men's open round of 16 at the 124th annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championship after winning three matches Friday in La Jolla.

Their next match today is against Stanford's Denis Lin and John Morrissey.
