This weekend: Friday, 11:30 a.m. vs. Brigham Young, 2 p.m. vs. UCLA; Saturday, 7 p.m. vs. Utah State, all at San Diego State. Sunday, 10 a.m. vs. Long Beach State, 12:30 p.m. vs. San Diego, all at USD.

The skinny: Fresno State, 7-1 at home, heads into tourney just 2-5 on neutral fields this season. Bulldogs have trio of .300 hitters in early going in Brooke Ortiz (.361, 7-8 on steals), Brenna Moss (.338, 10 RBIs, 12-13 SBs) and freshman Paige Gumz (.333). Freshmen Taylor Langdon, (3-1, 2.15 ERA), Jill Compton (5-5, 3.05) and Hannah Harris (2-2, 3.74) continue to gobble up all the starts in circle. ... Six of nine teams in tourney have links to Mountain West Conference, including current members SDSU, Boise State, Fresno State and New Mexico. BYU (2000-11) was an original member of the league and Utah State joins in 2014. ... UCLA is class of field, No. 12 in National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll. Senior OF B.B. Bates (.356, 11 HRs, 27 RBIs) and sophomore SS Stephany LaRosa (.419, 4, 14) on Player of Year watch list. ... Utah State has been without 2012 second-team All-America 1B Christine Thomsen (Bullard), who's out with an injury. Roster includes OF Amburlyn Orozco (Kingsburg) who's 3 for 12 in nine games
